5 activities for families with children not to be missed on Terceira island

If you plan to visit the Azores with your family, you must include Terceira island in your itinerary. This island, the third of the archipelago to be discovered by Portuguese navigators, offers a magnificent contrast between natural beauty of volcanic origin and an admirable work of man in the historic center of Angra do Heroísmo, its capital, founded in 1534, the first city in the Azores to be elevated to city status and classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

We recommend looking for accommodation at Angra’s historic center for greater comfort and to be able to explore the city’s heritage on foot. However, there is much more to do and experience with kids on the “lilac island”.

1 – Explore Monte Brasil Recreation Forest Reserve

Monte Brasil is one of the hallmarks of Angra do Heroísmo’and Terceira island, surrounded by the walls of São João Baptista Fortress, the largest in the Azores.

In Monte Brasil Recreio Forest Reserve you can find a vast botanical variety, with leisure facilities, which make this space a must-see. From its top, you will have a panoramic view of the south coast of the island and, on clear days, it is possible to spot the island of São Jorge, as well as Pico Mountain. To the North, it is possible to spot the city of Angra do Heroísmo and Ribeirinha, Morião and Santa Bárbara mountains.

2 – Visit Angra do Heroísmo’s Museum

Located in the former Convent of São Francisco, in the historic center of Angra do Heroísmo, this museum has existed here since 1969. Here you can find a lot of information related to regional history, as well as collections of ethnography, painting, sculpture, furniture, costumes, transport, ceramics, musical instruments, photographs, medals, numismatics, and even vintage toys.

3 – Get inside the volcanic chimney of Algar do Carvão

Here is one of the few volcanoes that can be visited in the world, which will impress both kids and grown-ups in the family. The volcanic chimney is about 100 meters deep and can be explored through a tunnel and access stairs.

4 – Spend the afternoon at Lagoa das Patas Recreation Forest Reserve

Lagoa das Patas is a small lake in the upper part of the island, which is located in a recreational forest reserve, between Serra de Santa Bárbara and Algar do Carvão, where you can spend quality time with your family, relaxing, having a picnic or interacting with the emblematic ducks that inhabit the place.

5 – Take a dip

The Azores’ sea invites you to unmissable and fun dives. On Terceira Island, choosing where to do it is the hardest part.

We suggest Praia da Prainha, located in the Bay of Angra and ideal for families with children due to its location, the gradual slope of the sea floor and the useful changing rooms, fixed umbrellas, and other amenities.

In Praia da Vitória, Baía da Praia, which is divided into three beaches (Prainha, Praia Grande and Praia dos Sargentos) or Praia da Riviera, will delight those who appreciate a long sandy beach.

Also visit Piscinas Naturais dos Biscoitos, one of the most famous bathing areas on the island, consisting of a natural pool surrounded by volcanic rocks, and the natural pools of Porto Judeu.

We wish you a great family trip! Fly with us.
