Once upon a time, a shepherd came down from the high cliffs of the island of São Jorge to leave his cattle to graze in one of the most beautiful Fajãs in the Azores.
While the cattle grazed, the man took the opportunity to rest a little by the saltwater lake, when he noticed a floating object right where the lake joined the sea.
Intrigued, he approached the mysterious object and, with great surprise, recognized an image of Lord Holy Christ, delicately carved in wood.
The pastor took the image and placed it in the best room of his house.
The next morning, the image was gone. Days later, the image was found again on the same place. And disappeared again.
After several occasions when the image was found in the sea, after disappearing from the several places where it was placed, someone said what everyone already sensed: “Lord Holy Christ wishes to be by the sea, in the caldera where it was found.”
So, the people decided to join their efforts and build there, in the now called Caldeira de Santo Cristo, a church where the image could stay forever blessing that magical place.
