And also pastries, tasty and unique pastries. The Azorean cuisine is another trip besides the trip made to get here. And it is waiting for the new discoverers of this new world.
COZIDO DAS FURNAS AT TONY’S RESTAURANT
One of the most famous dishes of the Azores is the “Cozido das Furnas”. It is a typical Portuguese dish – which can be found in Portugal, mainland and islands, mixing several meats with vegetables, but in the Azores it is prepared in a very special way, i.e., in volcanic craters. You have to go to Vale das Furnas in São Miguel island.
The ingredients are slowly cooked in pots buried in the volcanic soil benefiting from the heat coming from the volcanic activity and taking about six hours until it is ready to be served. Don’t forget booking to assure you get your dish. It is a consistent dish, but one that no Portuguese says no to. There are several locations where you can taste this dish.
Tony’s Restaurant is one of them. The “cozido” typically includes ingredients like white cabbage, white potato, sweet potato, yam, carrot, green cabbage, beef and pork meat, ears, forefoot, flank, chicken meat, black blood sausage and typical hot chorizo.
António José is the owner of Tony’s Restaurant. He was a taxi driver for fourteen years until in 1984 he bought the space in partnership with a long date friend, António Morgado (the name of the restaurant is based on both men being called Antónios (Tony is the nickname for António).

REGIONAL PASTRIES AT COLMEIA
For the ones who love pastries there is a wide offer of local specialties. For example, there are the “bolos lêvedos” (sweet muffins), a traditional pastry from Furnas which were a basic element of the food of the island’s first inhabitants. They contain wheat flour, sugar, butter, yeast and milk. They can be accompanied with jam or butter, but also just as they are. At A Colmeia, in Ponta Delgada, you can find many other offers of local pastries.
Recently, this house has developed the pastry “Esperanças” (Hopes), a creation based on what the nuns from Nossa Senhora da Esperança Convent called “Bolinhos de Esperança” (Cakes of Hope) which were offered at the end of the procession of Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres to the members of the Confraternity.
A Colmeia recovered this secret which might become a national pastry as it has already received local awards and is among the most important Portuguese pastries.
Don’t forget to visit this “colmeia” (hive) of pastries and take a delicious memory from the Azores when you go back home.

If you think that only because you are in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean the local gastronomy is all about fishes – and there are lots of them – you might be surprised to find out that here you can also taste some of the best meat of the world. Take a look at the landscape and you will notice that there are a lot of cows, that is, steaks. One of the most famous restaurants in the Azores is the Associação Agrícola de São Miguel’s Restaurant. And booking is absolutely necessary.
The beefsteak is known for its quality and unique flavour together with the art of excellent service. The area is wide – with capacity for about 140 people – and has a terrace with a Lounge space.
The Associação Agrícola de São Miguel’s Restaurant is used to receiving local clients and those who come from all around the world. When enjoying the “Bife à Associação” taste also the wonderful Portuguese wines and the local desserts. And, when on a diet, let it go for some hours!

At Angra do Heroísmo Marina, Terceira island, you can find the restaurant Cais de Angra.
Enjoy the view of incoming and outgoing boats and be sure that this is the perfect place to have a drink in a pleasant company. You can also have a nice meal with the best of what the Azorean sea has to offer. You can’t miss out the fresh grilled limpets with butter sauce.
The tuna steaks are also another specialty, as well as the barnacles. Never heard of it? Taste them and you will never forget them. For the right reasons!
MARINA DE ANGRA DO HEROÍSMO
GIN BAR PETER CAFÉ SPORT
No guide of the Azores would be complete without mentioning one of the most famous bars of the world, the Peter Café Sport, located at the historical centre of Horta, Faial island. This is a location with over 100 years of history. After the First World War, in 1918, Henrique Lourenço Ávila Azevedo, a sports fan, took the family business and named it “Café Sport”.
The space was the ideal stop-off point for sailors and crews crossing the ocean. And that’s how the name “Peter” came along. The Ammunitions and Maintenance Head Supervisor of the “HMS Lusitania II”, from the Royal Navy, thought that the son of Henrique, José Azevedo, looked a lot like his own son, Peter. Every time he went there he used the name Peter instead José. And the name stuck becoming the Peter Café Sport from then on. Today, it is his son, José Henrique Azevedo, who leads the business on the street which has his father’s name, deceased in 2005.
Famous for its gin, you can also appreciate the Scrimshaw Museum – engraved sperm whales teeth – opened in 1986, and having one of the largest private collections of Scrimshaw in the world. Visiting Horta and not going to Peter, is the same as not visiting Horta.
